Quantum's DXi8500 - The Next Step in Enterprise Deduplication

Solution Profile on the new DXi8500 Dedupe appliance from Quantum.  Quantum has long been a leading vendor of data protection storage, and a number of years ago extended a rich history of tape system innovation with a series of new disk-based data protection appliances under the product family banner of DXi™.  The family began with the introduction of several appliances that utilized Quantum’s patented variable-length deduplication technology in 2005 and followed in 2007 with the release of its flagship DXi7500 enterprise-sized system.  Since then, Quantum has continued to enhance its DXi offerings.

Quantum’s DXi8500 – A Solid Foundation for Enterprise Data Protection

Quantum has long been a leading vendor of data protection, and a number of years ago extended a rich history of tape system innovation with a series of new disk-based data protection appliances under the product family banner of DXiTM. Since then, Quantum has continued to enhance its DXi offerings. 2010 kicked- off an end-to-end refresh of the entire DXi product line – including DXi4000 systems for SMB and ROBO markets, DXi6000 series systems that address NAS and VTL requirements while being highly scalable and flexible, and an even bigger and faster DXi8500. In 2011 the entire portfolio took a seeming light-speed leap ahead, with advancements in metadata handling shifting the entire portfolio to inline deduplication, while Quantum’s DXi 2.1 software introduction set new performance records for the industry.

Moreover, Quantum simplified and cost-optimized their data protection offerings. Specifically, Quantum did away with per-feature licensing in a clear “what is right for the customer, is right for us” move. Today DXi systems come as complete packages that include deduplication, replication, encryption, direct path-to-tape, all interfaces (CIFS, NFS, VTL), Quantum Advanced Reporting tools, and DXi Accent software, which distributes deduplication to the backup server. The new data protection and reporting capabilities provide customers with significant added value when compared with competitive solutions like EMC/Data Domain's that require many of these features to be purchased separately. At the top of the Quantum portfolio sits the DXi8500, and Quantum’s advanced architecture and innovative packaging now give this system a number of distinct category leading advantages:

• A purpose-built tiered storage design that delivers up to 8.8TB/hr. inline target deduplication performance.

• All-inclusive base price licensing that together with performance advances, now let’s the DXi8500 deliver 2X the performance of similarly priced products.

• A 60% boost in scalability from a prior generation DXi8500 so that capacity now scales across a tremendously flexible range – from 40TB to 320TB.

• Included DXi Accent software that can extend hybrid deduplication to media servers, thereby reducing LAN and WAN traffic by deduplicating on the backup media server.

• Full support and compatibility with complementary Quantum technologies that can extend efficient DXi backup into challenging parts of the enterprise, such as virtual servers (Quantum vmPRO), or the completely virtual infrastructure (an upcoming product).

This Solution Profile examines Quantum’s new DXi8500 and its performance, scalability and streamlined backup management enhancements.
