Arun Taneja

Founder & Consulting Analyst

Arun Taneja is the Founder, President and Consulting Analyst of the Taneja Group, an analyst and consulting group focused on storage, server, networking and other infrastructure technologies, including Big Data and Cloud. He has 30+ years of experience in the industry specifically in the areas of Servers, Operating systems, Storage Area Networks, Network Attached Storage, Clustering and Data Management Software (backup/restore, replication, snapshot, SRM, virtualization, etc.). He founded Taneja Group in early 2003 and has built it to be a formidable presence in the analyst industry. The company specializes in thought leadership work in identifying future technology trends and how these technologies are best used for maximum business benefit. Mr. Taneja has held various executive level positions with companies like Sun Microsystems, IBM, Data General and Vixel (now Emulex). He specializes in identifying technologies that have disruptive market potential and assisting companies with all aspects of product definition, market positioning and strategy. He also works with a number of VC's in assessing new technologies and companies. He speaks often at trade shows, customer and industry events and writes on technology trends and implications for IT in the mid to large enterprises. He writes extensively and is frequently quoted in the press as an industry expert in storage, cloud and other technologies. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India and an MSEE and MBA from the University of New Hampshire.

Jeff Byrne

Senior Analyst & Consultant

Jeff brings to Taneja Group more than 20 years of marketing and operational experience at a variety of infrastructure software, systems and semiconductor companies. He focuses on all flavors of virtualization and the cloud, and also covers the intersection of these technologies with various types of storage. Jeff advises clients on issues ranging from product and competitive positioning to messaging and go-to-market initiatives, and helps companies to work through challenging product and technology transitions. Prior to joining Taneja Group, Jeff spent five years as Vice President of Marketing and later Vice President of Corporate Strategy at VMware, a leading provider of virtualization, cloud and mobility solutions acquired by EMC in 2004. Earlier in his career, Jeff held senior management positions at DG Systems, Dataquest, MIPS, and HP. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Math and Computational Sciences from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard.

Mike Matchett

Senior Analyst & Consultant

Mike brings to Taneja Group over 20 years experience in managing and marketing IT datacenter solutions particularly at the nexus of performance, capacity and virtualization. Currently he is focused on IT optimization for virtualization and convergence across servers, storage and networks, especially to handle the requirements of mission-critical applications, Big Data analysis, and the next generation data center. Mike has a deep understanding of systems management, IT operations, and solutions marketing to help drive architecture, messaging, and positioning initiatives. He has previously worked at a senior level in services, marketing, and product management at a diverse portfolio of companies ranging from large enterprises like Dell Storage and BMC, to successful startups like BGS and Akorri (acquired by NetApp), and was most recently a CTO/co-founder of a social media startup applying machine learning to augment human capability. He started out in IT implementing highly secure networks for federal agencies after proudly serving as a USAF intelligence officer in Desert Storm. Mike received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT.

Steve Ricketts

Senior Analyst & Consultant

Steve Ricketts has over twenty-five years of software marketing and product management experience in a variety of fields, including data protection, storage management, infrastructure performance management and cloud orchestration technologies. Steve is currently a Senior Analyst and Consultant with Taneja Group. In this role, Steve is responsible for analyzing the IT infrastructure market including all aspects of data protection and object storage technologies. Prior to Taneja Group, Steve co-founded Continuum Managed Services and, in the capacity of Vice President of Marketing, he launched Continuum's backup and disaster recovery business. Prior to Continuum, Steve was Vice President of Marketing at Akorri, a software company specializing in virtual storage management. Before Akorri, Steve was with IBM’s Software Group where he was the Program Director for WebSphere Portal. Steve got to IBM through the acquisition of Bowstreet where he was VP Marketing. He held a similar position at Emptoris. Prior to Emptoris, Steve co-founded ScanSoft (now Nuance). Steve holds a BBA in Marketing from Iowa State University.

Jeff Kato

Senior Analyst & Consultant

Jeff joins Taneja Group after a 30 year career in the storage industry with HP. At HP Jeff held various senior management positions including several years as Director of Engineering where he led the development of HP’s StoreOnce data deduplication appliances and enterprise tape libraries. As an engineer at HP Jeff received several patents in area of data reduction and invented the industry’s first commercially viable embedded data compression technology available in tape products. Jeff was actively involved in setting strategic direction for HP storage and brings a unique and broad perspective of the storage and computer industry to Taneja Group clients. Jeff joined Taneja group in April 2014 and focuses on the Converged Infrastructure and the emerging Hyper-Convergence technology.

Jim Whalen

Senior Analyst & Consultant

Jim brings 30 years of technology experience to Taneja Group, the last 16 of them specializing in Data Protection, from his career at Hewlett Packard and Colorado Memory Systems. Jim held engineering management positions at both companies, where he led the development of a variety of backup and archive software products, along with several generations of Hewlett Packard’s tape library product lines. In addition to his Research and Development background, he also has technology marketing experience from his pre-data protection days at HP and familiarity with patents and patent infringement litigation, having served as a an expert witness in a case heard by the International Trade Commission. Jim has been focusing on the whole range of data protection technologies since joining Taneja Group in April 2015, which aligns with his passion for analyzing new data protection, cloud and continuity technologies and architectures. Jim is extending his research into application of data protection technologies into the world of big data (Hadoop, NoSQL databases, etc.). Along with educating the market so that IT professionals can make the right decisions for their individual environments and employ best practices, he also enjoys helping his clients market and position their products for maximum effectiveness. He received his BSEE from Carnegie Mellon University and his MSCS from Colorado State University. He also completed the Executive Development Program at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Christine Taylor


Christine brings her communications expertise to the Taneja Group. She has researched and written extensively on data storage technology including storage networking, messaging, and storage security. Christine previously served as a systems administrator for Avery Dennison’s Scientific Computing division. From there she entered technical journalism as a senior editor for Computer Technology Review and served as editor-in-chief of Storage Management Solutions. As a marketing communications consultant, she worked with companies like EMC, Sybase and CommVault. Christine received her BA from Westmont College and her MA from Fuller.

Tara Hassard

Client Relations Manager

Tara is the Client Relations Manager for Taneja Group. She is the primary interface to clients and future clients. She manages the office, handles event coordination and oversees all website content and marketing efforts. She also supports sales campaigns, research projects and accounting. Tara has a BS in Business Management from Mt. Ida College in Newton, MA and has been with Taneja Group since early 2003.

Ryan Newfell

Marketing Support & Social Media Coordinator

Ryan has been with Taneja Group since April 2013. He handles content management and leads social media marketing. He assists with business administrative tasks, including scheduling, event coordinating, and client relations. Ryan previously worked for the Cumberland Gulf Group, UBM Channel (now The Channel Company), and the TJX Companies. Ryan graduated with an Associate of Science degree in May 2014.
